Project of the Month!

Each month we love to present you with a new project that will enhance your sewing experience and inspire you with beautiful technique.

This month, we are making a Chalk board Magnetic memo board for your fridge.  This is a fun way to create chore, shopping, etc…lists for the whole family.  You will use chalkboard fabric (cool stuff) and cotton fabric along with 4 magnets to create a one-of-a-kind finished project.

Creative Class – Split Nine Patch Quilt Class #2

Split Nine Patch Quilt

In this 2-day class you will learn how to piece a Split Nine Patch block, and in particular, how to make half square triangles. We will also explore different possible settings for your blocks. Then you will learn how to use your embroidery machine to quilt your finished top or pillow. We will use a combination of embroidery designs and decorative stitches with the circular attachment to accomplish this. You will have the choice to incorporate free motion stippling.

For the finishing touch you will learn to apply hot fix crystals to your top.

You have the option of making a 16-block quilt or a 4-block pillow. The size of your blocks will depend on what embroidery machine you have. For a Topaz 25 the blocks will be 8” unfinished. For machines that accept 200 mm wide hoops, it will be 9 ½” unfinished.

Supplies needed:

Fabric:

Fabrics should be tone on tone or with very small-scale designs. Busy fabrics will detract from the quilting and embroidery. 100% cotton preferably.
You have the option of using 2 or 3 fabrics. Fabrics can be in the same color or in contrasting colors. All fabrics should be al least 40” wide.

For quilt top:
 
2-fabric option
Light fabric: ¾ yards
Dark fabric: 1½ yards (includes binding)
Backing: 2 yards
Batting: 60” x 60”
3-fabric option
Light or medium light fabric: ½ yard
Medium dark fabric: 1 fat quarter
Dark fabric: ¾ yard (includes binding)
Backing: 2 yards
Batting: 60” x 60”
For pillow:
2-fabric option
Light fabric: 1 fat quarter
Dark fabric: 1 fat quarter
You will need an extra 1 yard of one of these fabrics for the piping and back of the pillow.

Light fabric: 1 fat quarter
Medium dark fabric: 1 fat quarter

Sewing supplies:

- Embroidery machine (embroidery arm will only be needed on the second class).
- All sewing machine accessories.
- Piecing thread in a color matching your fabrics. Preferably cotton.
- Robinson –Anton Embroidery thread in colors matching your light and dark fabrics.
- 80 or 90 Embroidery needle.
- Scissors
- Rotary cutter and mat
- A ruler at least 12” x 3 ½“
- A small square ruler with a diagonal line (at least 2 ½“ x 2 ½“)
- Erasable marking pen

 Feet:
Circular attachment
¼” piecing foot
Open toe foot
Free motion quilt foot (will discuss options during first class)

Hoop:
For Topaz 25: 240 x 150
For Topaz 20, 30 and 50, Ruby and Diamond: a hoop at least 200 mm wide. Quilters hoop (200 x 200) is best option.

Cutting directions:
If possible cut your fabric before class as follows:

For each block you will need:

The last part of the class will be teaching you how to program on your new machine. Those who have machines that do not have this ability may leave early, or stay and watch. Our 6D Premier  system has a complete digitizing program that is called Design Creator.  You can  create designs using the built in Wizard or using the manual tools for more intricate designs.  Why be limited to what someone else designed?
